Engie, formerly GDF Suez, is a French energy group. In 2015, it was the world’s third-largest group in the energy sector (excluding oil). Its main shareholder is the French State, which holds a quarter of the share capital (24.1 per cent of the share capital and 27.6 per cent of the voting rights in Engie). The group was formed on 22 July 2008 following a merger between Gaz de France (GDF) and Suez. In April 2015, the group announced a change to its trading name, with ‘GDF Suez’ becoming ‘Engie’, the group’s official name from 29 July 2015.
